From the very beginning Mass Effect 3 exudes a sense of things coming to an end. The strange beauty of the Reapers, towering godly metal cephalopods descending calmly on an earth hapless to defend itself, is conveyed with a quiet certitude and minimal histrionics. It is the end of the world, and for those who have invested the 150-plus hours into this fabulous game series, the end of existence in this fascinating and thoughtful piece of creativity. Mass Effect 3 rounds out its epic space opera with innumerous moments of restrained maturity, bringing about a conclusion that satisfies better than anything, not just in games, but in any pop medium.

I don't want to spoil anything about Mass Effect 3 for you, so all you really need to know is this: Yes. Yes, you should get it. Yes, it lives up to the hype. Yes, it's the ending the series deserves. Yes, it's an incredible adventure that will terrify you, make you laugh, and more than likely move you to tears more than once. And yes, that character you care about comes back.

Watching the growth of BioWare's role-playing saga Mass Effect has been rather fascinating. Players have witnessed a game rooted in strong storytelling and impactful decision-making morph into an equally impressive third-person action title.

Commander Shepard is back and he is ready to take on the final frontier in the third, and possibly final, Mass Effect entry. Set to be the most ambitious Mass Effect game yet, this installment has set some extremely high expectations for an already ambitious franchise. Coming to the table with an intense story mode and an all new multiplayer suite, could this finally be the space epic to end all space epics? Or will this anticipated iteration be massively ineffectual?

Mass Effect 3 is the fulfilment of a promise. It seemed so simple six years ago when BioWare originally announced the series. Take the decisions from every game, make them matter, and make them carry over. The unspoken insinuation was that persistent consequences would lead to a fiction that resonated in ways that no game had really attempted before. BioWare wanted you to care about the things you did in each game, to consider them.

Across the country, it's a fair bet that right now, an awful lot of gamers are praying for the sort of snow that decimates public transport and provides a ready-made excuse to skip work. After all, there are more important things to do, such as saving the universe. And that's precisely what the third instalment of BioWare's epic space-RPG Mass Effect offers.

Few games come with the amount of hype Mass Effect 3 has swirling around it. As the culmination of BioWare’s epic sci-fi RPG trilogy, Mass Effect 3 hasn’t garnered this groundswell in an artificial way. Rather, anticipation steadily sits at a fever pitch because the previous installments—Mass Effect, and especially Mass Effect 2—rate amongst the best games ever made. And in many ways, Mass Effect 3 has set the bar even higher as the worthy conclusion to one of the finest stories ever told in gaming history, even if it’s still admittedly imperfect.

Mass Effect 3 is a remarkably satisfying conclusion to a beloved trilogy, and a poignant and memorable role-playing action game in its own right.

The Reapers have invaded. The galaxy is on the brink of destruction. One lone human will rise up and overcome.

Overcome, (s)he has.

Near the beginning of Mass Effect 3, an emotional scene takes place when Commander Shepard encounters a frightened boy on Earth. A feeling of hopelessness pervades the encounter; Shepard can’t do anything to help, and the child knows it. The galaxy didn’t prepare for the Reaper invasion, and defeat seems inevitable. The scribes at BioWare never abandon this tone throughout Mass Effect 3, leading to a dark story that beats mercilessly to the pulse of war and the death it delivers.

The first time I started to tear up a bit, I'd only been playing for two hours.

Because of the vagaries of the review process and pre-release games, I was playing a newly-created Commander, rather than importing the adventure of the Shepard I played in Mass Effect and Mass Effect 2.

Days after finishing Mass Effect 3, I find myself still haunted by a decision I made midway through my 30-hour campaign to rally the galaxy against the invasion of giant chthonic god-machines known as "the Reapers." It's the sort of decision that had me truly wracking my brain and deliberating over how the options the game offered me were no longer simply "good Boy Scout" versus "bad boy Bauer" (from 24, a show that the developers at BioWare have frequently mentioned in reference to the general attitude of a player who follows the "Renegade" path) as in previous Mass Effect installments.

Mass Effect was a space RPG about killing a flying robot god – a Reaper. Mass Effect 2 was about stopping one from being built. In Mass Effect 3, they’ve warped in from darkspace in their hundreds.

And that’s all I’ll say about the plot. This review will be spoiler-free even for those of you who’ve avoided the trailers and the demo.

Like countless others, we invested well over a hundred hours into the science fiction space opera that is Mass Effect. We rose to the rank of Spectre, the intergalactic supercops working for the U.N.-like Galactic Citadel; we learned about the Reapers, an ancient robotic threat with intent to destroy all organic life; and we put together a group of soldiers to delay the Reaper attack, leading a squad on a suicide mission into the unknown. And now, with the arrival of the final act of the trilogy, we were promised a finale that would bring this tale together in unexpected yet satisfying ways.

Mass Effect 3 starts out at a disadvantage thanks to the weight of expectation larded on it by the first two games in the series. Not only does the game have to wrap up a sprawling, galaxy-spanning storyline in a satisfying way, but it has to do so while avoiding gameplay that obsessive fans will see as "more of the same" after spending dozens of hours with the first two titles.
